Discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh.
So far Pluto is known to have 3 moons and mainly consists of nitrogen (N) and methane (CH4). |
Once Pluto was known as the smallest, coldest, and most distant planet from the Sun. 2006 according to new rules, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) formally downgraded Pluto from an official planet to a dwarf planet.
A "dwarf planet"
- 1. is a celestial body that is in orbit around the Sun,
- 2. has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape,
- 3. has not - contrary to a planet - cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and
- 4. is not a satellite.
Most of what we know about Pluto we have learned since the late 1970s from Earth-based observations. Many of the key questions about Pluto, its companion moon, Charon, and the outer fringes of our solar system await close-up observations by robotic space flight missions.

Mythology: |
Pluto is an alternative name for the Greek god Hades, but was more often used in Roman mythology in their presentation of the god of the underworld. Although he is often envisioned today as evil (for his similarities to the Christian Satan) the Romans did not view him as such.
Pluto was originally not the god of the underworld. Pluto is cognate with the Greek word "Ploutos" (wealth), and, under the original name Plutus, was considered by the Romans as the giver of gold, silver, and other subterranean substances. Because these "gifts" were mined, Pluto became recognized as the god of the physical underworld, which in turn helped him become rec
ognized as the god of the spiritual underworld and thus death. This brought about his mythological relationship to the Greek god Hades. |
